Flyfisherman Uses Spey Casting Skills to Rescue

I’m an avid flyfisherman and learning the intricacies of spey casting is still an ongoing process. But recent news has given me more reason to pursue the sport. As a former lifeguard, I’m all about rescue and not so much the search part. This story in the Oregonian is what a quick-thinking flyfisherman, Don Elder, did to save the lives of those in danger. What a great story!

    Memorial Day Rememberances

Please spend a little time today to remember those who served during this Memorial Day Holiday.

    Sharks! - Mano!

Just read an article “Shark Shank”by John Fink regarding shark-cage diving tours. It’s a short and interesting insight into what I think may be attracting sharks to the nearby shoreline IMHO. I believe that it serves no purpose at all but to antagonize sharks to come-a-munching near the shoreline. This coupled with the dwindling food supply may only increase their presence. Yikes!

Popular Hawaiian Fishing Terms You Might Not Know

These are terms you might not know regarding fish species and fishing in Hawai’i. If you’re a fishing fanatic like me, you will definitely want to know these terms whether you visit or live in the islands. Learn a new language and you’ll soon be a well-rounded fisherman!

    ‘Ahi - Tuna (all species)
‘Ahi Palaha - Albacore or Tombo (Japanese)
    ‘Ahi Po’onui - Bigeye Tuna
    Aku - Skipjack Tuna
    A’u - Marlin
    A’u Ku - Swordfish
    A’u Lepe - Sailfish
    Kawakawa - False Albacore
    Kaku - Barracuda
    Lawai’a - Fisherman or fishing
    Mahimahi - Dolphin or dorado
    Mano - Shark
    O’io - Bonefish
    Ono - Wahoo
    O’opu haole - Bass

I’ll try to add a page for Hawaiian fishing terms soon. If you have any type of fish you might want to know about, send me an email or tweet me (left sidebar for links).

$10 Million Dollar FLW Fantasy Fishing Tour

I was taking a look at this and it seems pretty interesting. I’m giving everyone a heads up and you’ve got about 24 days before the start of the next tournament. So don’t say I didn’t tell you. Please check out the $10 million dollar FLW Fantasy Fishing Tour.

They also have a blog and a Facebook page for the Fantasy Fishing Tour.

Also I downloaded their Firefox toolbar and it has links and a countdown timer to the start of the FLW Fantasy Fishing Tour. That way you’re always aware of what’s going on and when to prepare for the next fishing tourney. It’s pretty cool and the interface is great too.

Here’s a Time article on the fantasy fishing tour and its growing popularity.

I love watching the tour and it might be fun to follow along by playing the game at the same time. Check it out! You might just win a million bucks!

    Please take my fishing poll

Please take my poll and see what type of Hawaiian fish most people are interested in Hawai’i. It’ll be a great start to what I can focus on this new blog for fishing. I’m open to all fish whether freshwater or saltwater but let me know if its not on the poll list.

    I’m Getting There

Aloha and mahalo for your patience. I’ve been updating the site over the past month. Been a little busy writing an article for this month, getting a new blog up on Wordpress, learning the blog ropes thru Yaro Starak’s tutorial program and hopefully get all of this done before Mother’s Day! Yeah right!
